High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that some consider a noninvasive and painless replacement for face lifts. It uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin.
High frequency Ultrasound beams pass through the skin, to deliver precise and fractional ultrasound energy, at exactly the right depths and temperature, to stimulate both muscle firming/lifting and new collagen production, all with no damage or disruption to the skin’s surface. Consider this treatment a natural face-lift. It works by the connective tissue repairing itself after be treated with the ultrasound beam.
HIFU was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for brow lifts. The device was also cleared by the FDA in 2014 to improve lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and neckline (décolletage).

Best results are achieved with a series of 4-6 sessions at 6 week intervals.

O
ur skin remains tight when there is a high concentration of collagen
and elastin in the dermis layer. When the body lowers its production of collagen, the upper layers of skin begin to wrinkle and sag. To reverse this, HIFU stimulates collagen growth by sending ultrasound energy to the dermis layer. The wave of energy causes a small injury to the tissue. However, as the tissue heals it produces new collagen that tightens the skin naturally. To achieve this, our HIFU technologies target the four different layers of skin that affect physical appearance; specifically, the epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous fat, and superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS). For this reason, each different cartridge is designed to converge ultrasound at a specific skin layer depth. Amazingly, during skin
and neck treatment sessions, the patient’s skin becomes more firm and youthful as new collagen grows. In addition, after a single procedure, the patient’s skin will continually improve as new collagen is generated. A great advantage of the procedure is the fact that you will achieve optimal cosmetic results with only one treatment session.
ost patients only feel minimal discomfort while the ultrasound is being delivered.
T
he size of the treatment area and the plan chosen affects the duration of the HIFU treatment session, which can range between 30 and 90 minutes. We will be able to give you an estimate during your consultation.
HIFU treatment is known as the ‘lunch time face lift’ as it’s quick and you can return to work and continue with your day. Some people may have some mild redness and maybe light bruising the next day
atients may experience skin redness for a few days after the session. Some mild swelling, tingling or tenderness may occur temporarily. Less common effects include slight bruising and skin sensitivity.
ou may experience some immediate effects from the treatment. However, results may take up to 3 months to show and they will continue to improve for up to 7 months post treatment.
esults from a single HIFU treatment may last over 1 year. Please note, though, that each individual may respond differently to the treatment.
Older people with more extensive photo-aging, severe skin laxity, or very saggy skin on the neck aren’t good candidates and may need surgery.
HIFU may not be appropriate for everyone. In general, the procedure works best on people older than 30 with mild-to-moderate skin laxity.
HIFU won’t work as well for people with more severe cases of sagging skin.
eople with photodamaged skin or a high degree of loose skin may need several treatments before seeing results.
n order to address specific concerns, we tailor-make our HIFU treatments and our physicians use them also in combination with other procedures, like for example threads, radio-frequency, mesotherapy and injectables. There are certain contra-indications and restrictions in the order the treatments can be used in conjunction with other procedures. Therefore it is paramount to have an in-depth and thorough consultation with our physicians, before you decide to go ahead with a HIFU procedure.
If additional treatments are needed, you will schedule the next treatment.
While the ultrasound energy is being applied, you might feel heat and tingling. You can take a pain medication if it’s bothersome.
You’re free to go home and resume your normal daily activities right away after the procedure.
IFU is considered very safe if performed by a trained and qualified professional.
The best part about this treatment is that you’re able to resume your normal activities immediately after you leave the provider’s office. Some slight redness or swelling may occur, but it should subside quickly. A light tingling sensation of the treated area may persist for a few weeks.
Rarely, you may experience temporary numbness or bruising, but these side effects usually go away after a few days.
